Why School, Why?

I'm going to go off on a really quick little rant. My girls are constantly coming home all excited about something they got at school. It's usually a ticket for a kids' meal or a flyer about a fabulous prize they can win. In the past two or three weeks we have had four such experiences. On Monday my girls ran through the door yelling, "Mom! Mom! We can get a free Scooby Doo T-Shirt and a pair of sunglasses! All we have to do is mail these out to our grandmas." They were soooo stoked! I took the packet from them and read the fine print. Yes, they will get these prizes if they can get two or more relatives to subscribe to a magazine! Then I'm left to break their hearts and try to explain to them how things that sound too good to be true usually are. They were devastated and I felt so bad for them. I don't think it's fair.
Then yesterday they each brought home a ticket for a free kidsmeal begging Ryan & I to take them out for dinner. Again, I read the fine print... First of all the restaurant is clear up in Layton! Second of all, it's with the purchase of an adult meal and drink and when I looked online, the meals at this place are $20 a plate! Again dashed hopes and broken hearts. Why, oh why must they be so sneaky and do this to my little babies?

I hear you sister! It makes me nuts when they want to win that color tv and all they have to do is sell 400 magazine subscriptions and 222 rolls of wrapping paper. There poor little hearts get smashed to smitherines when you can't do it. =(

I know the feeling, my kids were selling chocolates, of coures I didn't want to sell any or buy and and they cried and whined because they wouldn't get any tickets put in the drawing for about five things the whole school is trying to win. I hate these dumb fundraisers and their sneaky way and constantly reminding them about it, sell sell sell is shoved down their throats all day long. Not fair to parents or the kids, it should be outlawed!!

This really should be outlawed at school!

One option is to get on the PTA Board and change what they do. Maybe at the new school?? Our school got so tired of the fund raisers that they finally just asked for a set donation at the first of the year. We were are WAY relieved and happy to contribute.

And on the grandma side, we always feel guilty if we don't help out--but who has time to read all those magazines????
